Special Devotional for Houston Area Single Adults with Elder and Sister Gifford Nielsen

Please Join a Special Devotional for Houston Metro Area Single Adults on the evening of Sunday, June 28 at 7-8 pm.  The meeting will be held on Zoom. Elder S. Elder and Sister Nielsen and their six children made Houston their home for most of their careers.  He is well known as the former Quarterback for the Houston Oilers and then the Sports Director and Anchor for KHOU-TV in Houston.  He is now a General Authority Seventy.  We are very fortunate to have Elder and Sister Nielsen as our special speakers.

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2013. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Sixth Quorum of the Seventy in the North America Southwest Area. He is currently serving at Church headquarters as an Assistant Executive Director of the Missionary Department and as President of the North America Central Area.

Elder Nielsen received a bachelor’s degree in 1977 from Brigham Young University and was named one of the top five scholar athletes by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. After becoming an All-American quarterback at Brigham Young University, he was selected by the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) in the third round of the 1978 NFL draft. Following a six-year career as quarterback for the Oilers, he worked as the sports director and anchor for KHOU-TV in Houston for 25 years. In 1994 Elder Nielsen was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Elder Nielsen has served in numerous Church callings, including elders quorum president, Young Men president, bishop, stake president, and Area Seventy.

Elder Nielsen was born in Provo, Utah, on October 25, 1954. He married Wendy Olson in April 1975. They are the parents of six children and 25 grandchildren.

Wendy and Gifford Nielsen

Wendy Kay Olson Nielsen was born in Provo, Utah. She met Giff Nielsen in sixth grade, and they were friends throughout their school years. They were married in the Provo Utah Temple in 1975, after her sophomore year at Brigham Young University. Wendy postponed her college education to become a full-time mom. The Nielsens raised their six children in Houston, Texas.

In April 2019 Wendy graduated from Brigham Young University after a 44-year break. She considers being “Mimi” to 25 grandchildren her chosen career. She loves to travel and meet wonderful people throughout the world and feels it a privilege to serve the Lord and testify of Him.
